We have some news worth celebrating. NatureMed was just named Best Dispensary in The Pitch KC’s Best of KC 2026 awards, marking our second year in a row taking home the title after our first win in 2025. On top of that, our own AJ Gardner from the Gladstone location took home Best Budtender. Both titles were decided by community votes, which makes this win mean even more. It is one thing to be recognized by a panel of judges. It is another to be voted for, back to back, by the patients who walk through our doors every day.

A Back to Back Win for the Whole NatureMed Team

Winning Best Dispensary once is an honor. Winning it twice in a row tells us something different, it tells us that the trust people place in NatureMed is not a one time thing. Best Dispensary is not a title any one person earns either. It reflects the work of every budtender, every store manager, and everyone behind the scenes who helps make a NatureMed visit feel easy, welcoming, and informed. From Kansas City to Gladstone, Independence, O’Fallon, and St. Louis, our team shows up every day to help people find what works for them. This back to back win belongs to all five locations and everyone who has supported us since 2025 and beyond.

Meet AJ Gardner, Your Best Budtender Winner

AJ has built a reputation at our Gladstone location for being knowledgeable, approachable, and genuinely invested in helping patients find the right product for their needs, and the title means everything to her. “This recognition honestly means the entire world to me,” AJ said. “Not only does it warm my heart, but it also blows my mind that I was able to win. There was an overwhelming amount of love and support poured out from our patients, they were all so kind and excited about the entire process. A big thank you to all of you!”

AJ’s path into cannabis started years before NatureMed. “I’ve been on the ins and outs of it for a while. I had my first smoke shop job four years ago, which taught me a ton about glass and accessories that go along with smoking,” she explained. “After that I went on to have a few more random jobs and then landed at another smoke shop, where I learned more about management and inventory. Then I turned 21! As soon as I did, I started looking into different places to work, and decided on NatureMed.” Her connection to the plant is personal too. AJ was diagnosed with endometriosis in April of 2025, and she has found that cannabis products are the only thing that come close to actually helping with her pain relief. She has been part of the NatureMed team since September of 2025.

When a patient walks up not quite sure what they need, AJ has a simple way of narrowing it down. “I always ask them exactly what they’re looking to get out of the effects,” she said. “From there, I’m able to figure out what to hook them up with, especially terpene wise. As for what they enjoy, I normally just ask them what their preference would be. Some people enjoy smoking, some enjoy edibles, and that’s okay!” Her own favorites change as new products come in, but right now she is reaching for “Dialed In gummies, Vertical’s new Live Resin gummies which haven’t launched quite yet, Bambino blunts, Local and Robust hash rosin and live rosin, and local flower.”

Honoring Juneteenth: Freedom, History, and Community

Juneteenth is one of the most significant holidays in American history, and its recognition has only grown in recent years. Observed every June 19th, it marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally received word that they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed. For NatureMed, Juneteenth is a moment to pause, reflect, and celebrate the resilience, culture, and contributions of Black Americans, both historically and in the communities we serve today.

What Is Juneteenth and Why Does It Matter?

On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that the Civil War had ended and all enslaved people were free. This news came roughly two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. The delay represented the slow reach of federal authority into Confederate-held territory and serves as a reminder that legal freedom and lived freedom are not always the same thing. Juneteenth is a celebration of that moment of arrival, and a recognition of the long road that came before and after it.

A Federal Holiday With Deep Roots

Juneteenth has been celebrated by Black communities for over 150 years, long before it received official recognition. In 2021, it was signed into law as a federal holiday, making it the first new federal holiday established since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983. That recognition was meaningful, but the holiday’s significance was never dependent on government approval. It has always been a day of community, food, music, storytelling, and pride. Traditions vary by family and region, but the spirit remains the same: freedom is worth celebrating, honoring, and protecting.

The Connection Between Cannabis Justice and Juneteenth

Juneteenth and cannabis justice are more connected than many people realize. The War on Drugs disproportionately impacted Black communities for decades, resulting in arrests, incarceration, and lost opportunities at rates far exceeding those of white Americans, even when usage rates were comparable. As cannabis legalization continues to expand across the country, including right here in Missouri, it is important to acknowledge that history and advocate for a more equitable industry going forward. Supporting Black-owned cannabis businesses, pushing for expungement policies, and centering equity in the legal market are all ways the industry can honor the communities most harmed by prohibition.

Juneteenth is best celebrated with intention. Western Kentucky’s First Medical Cannabis Dispensary

The Paducah location is the first medical dispensary to open in the Western Kentucky region, and we couldn’t be prouder to carry that distinction. NatureMed Paducah is now serving patients across McCracken, Calloway, Graves, Marshall, Livingston, and surrounding counties, bringing medical cannabis access to a part of the state that has long needed it. For so many patients in this area, the nearest dispensary was hours away. That changes now.

A Long Time Coming for Paducah Patients

As CEO Daniel Woodward shared at the opening: “Opening our doors in Paducah is a moment we’ve worked toward for a long time, and we couldn’t be more proud to finally serve patients here in Western Kentucky. This community has waited patiently for access to legal, regulated medical cannabis, and we take that responsibility seriously.” That spirit defines everything we do at NatureMed. This isn’t just a business expansion. It’s a genuine commitment to the communities we serve, and Paducah is no exception.

Patient education is our top priority at the new location. As our marketing director Myles Mayfield put it: “With us expanding into Kentucky, something that we hold really near and dear to our heart – it’s even in our name, is the medical side.” In every location, you’ll find a knowledgeable team ready to walk you through your options, answer your questions, and help you find products that work for your specific needs. How Kentucky’s Medical Cannabis Program Works

If you’re new to the medical cannabis process in Kentucky, here’s what you need to know. The Kentucky Medical Cannabis Program launched in January 2025, established by Senate Bill 47 signed by Governor Beshear in March 2023. To access a dispensary, patients need a valid medical cannabis card, which requires an evaluation from a licensed Kentucky practitioner. Qualifying conditions include cancer, chronic severe or debilitating pain, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, muscle spasms, PTSD, chronic nausea, and other conditions approved by the Kentucky Center for Cannabis. Once certified, patients can keep a 30-day supply at home and a 10-day supply on their person.

Getting Your Kentucky Medical Card

The process to get your medical card is straightforward. You’ll need to establish a relationship with a licensed Kentucky practitioner who is registered with the state’s medical cannabis program. Your first visit must be in person, but subsequent certifications can be done via telehealth once that relationship is established. Once you have your written certification, you can register through the state’s online portal and begin shopping. Missouri Cannabis Tax Update

Missouri Cannabis Tax Update

When Missourians voted to legalize adult-use marijuana, the constitutional amendment authorized each dispensary’s local government to assess an additional 3% local sales tax. For dispensaries located inside city limits, like our Independence and O’Fallon locations, some surrounding counties also imposed their own additional 3% on top of that. Following a successful legal challenge by the industry, the Missouri Supreme Court ruled that this double taxation was unlawful. As a result, customers who made adult-use purchases at our Independence or O’Fallon locations between October 1, 2023 and July 31, 2025 may have been subject to this additional county tax.

While Missouri law designates the retailer as the taxpayer entitled to any sales tax refunds, NatureMed has chosen to create a voluntary refund program to pass that benefit on to you. Eligible customers can apply for refund based on their purchases during the affected period. To be considered, you’ll need to submit proof of purchase. Please note that our budtenders are unable to look up previous transactions, so a valid receipt is required. Submission does not guarantee eligibility, and all requests are subject to review.
