Cooking with Cannabis

Cooking with Cannabis

In recent years, the culinary world has embraced cannabis as an ingredient, despite being somewhat unconventional. One of the reasons that people are starting to cook with it is that it is both flavorful and functional.

Once relegated to simple homemade edibles like brownies and cookies, cannabis cooking has expanded into a sophisticated culinary practice that spans from gourmet appetizers to elegant desserts.

Whether you’re a culinary expert or a home cook, understanding how to incorporate cannabis into your cooking can transform your approach to both the flavor and potential health benefits of your meals. Here we’ll dive deep into the art of cooking with cannabis, covering everything you need to know to begin creating your cannabis culinary creations.

The Importance of Decarboxylation

Before you start cooking, it’s important to understand the chemistry behind cannabis. The plant’s key compounds, cannabinoids such as THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), require activation through decarboxylation to produce their full effects.

Decarboxylation involves heating cannabis to convert the acidic form of THC, THCA, into the psychoactive THC, and similarly, CBDA into CBD.

Here’s a simple guide to decarboxylate your cannabis at home:

  • Preheat your oven to approximately 245°F.
  • Spread coarsely ground cannabis flowers evenly on a baking sheet.
  • Bake for 30-40 minutes, mixing every 10 minutes to ensure even heating.
  • The cannabis should look lightly toasted and smell potent.
  • Note: The results will vary depending on the flower, oven and desired results. You might need to adjust the temperature or the cooking time slightly to get the effect that you’re looking for.

Once decarboxylated, your cannabis is ready to be used for cooking.

Choosing the Right Fat for Infusion

Cannabinoids are fat-soluble, meaning they bind best with fats. This binding makes cannabinoids more effective and easier to digest. Popular choices for fat infusions include butter, coconut oil, and olive oil.

Here’s a simple guide on how to make cannabis-infused butter:

  • Melt butter over low heat in a saucepan.
  • Stir in decarboxylated cannabis and maintain a low heat for 2 to 3 hours, stirring occasionally.
  • Strain the mixture through a fine mesh or cheesecloth to remove the plant material.
  • Store your cannabis-infused butter in the refrigerator or freezer in an airtight container.

Looking For Something Simpler?

While cannabis butter is one of the more traditional ways to cook with cannabis, there is a lot of work involved, even before you get to the actual recipe. So if you’re looking for something a little bit easier, there are a few options that you could go with instead.

Dissolvables are a great option if you want to add a little bit of cannabis to your cooking. Just add the dissolvable power into almost anything that you’re making and you have a quick cannabis infused dish to enjoy. You can add dissolvables to almost anything but they do mix better into liquids or soft creamy ingredients.

You can also add pre-made cannabis infused ingredients to meals you’ve already made. Things like infused chocolate or infused sauces are a great way to add a little bit of cannabis to your meals.

It’s also a great way to share this meal with someone who might not want to medicate, as you can just add those ingredients to your portion and use non-infused ingredients for theirs.

Dosage Control

Dosage is very important in cannabis cooking. The potency of your final product depends on many factors, including the strength of your cannabis strain and how much you use in your infusion.

To make sure that you’re being mindful of you’re dosages consider the following:

  • Start with a small amount of cannabis when creating your infusions.
  • Use lab-tested cannabis to know the exact THC and CBD levels, this will help with precise dosage calculations.
  • Remember that the effects of edibles can be more potent and longer-lasting than other forms of consumption.

Recipe Ideas

With your cannabis-infused fat, a world of culinary possibilities opens up. Here are some creative recipes to get you started:

  • Cannabis-Infused Chocolate Mousse: Elevate a classic chocolate mousse by using cannabis-infused cream. Chill, whip, and serve for a decadent dessert.
  • Herb-Roasted Chicken: Brush a whole chicken with cannabis-infused olive oil, season with herbs, and roast for a savory centerpiece.
  • Vegan Cannabis Pesto: Blend basil, nuts, garlic, and cannabis-infused olive oil for a vegan-friendly sauce perfect for pasta or as a sandwich spread.
  • Cannabis-Infused Granola: Mix oats, nuts, dried fruit, and a hint of cannabis-infused coconut oil, then bake for a healthy snack.

Safety Tips

  • Always label your cannabis-infused creations to avoid accidental ingestion.
  • Store cannabis-infused products safely out of reach of children and pets.
  • Be mindful of the legal status of cannabis in your location and adhere to local laws.

Cooking with cannabis is more than just a trend—it’s an innovative approach to blending culinary art with cannabinoid science. By mastering the basics of cannabis infusions and exploring creative recipes, you can offer delightful dishes that combine flavor, fun, and functionality.

Whether you’re cooking for health reasons or for pleasure, the integration of cannabis into your cooking repertoire can open up a new dimension in your culinary experiences.

Creative Ways to Enjoy Cannabis in The Cold

As we prepare for sub-zero temperatures this weekend in Missouri, cannabis enthusiasts may find themselves wondering how to “embrace the chill” while still enjoying their favorite plant. No sweat, as we’ve compiled a list of creative ways to savor cannabis in below-zero temperatures, ensuring a cozy and pleasant experience.

But First, Layer Up:

Before you head outside to light up a joint, make sure to dress as warmly as you can. This weekend in Missouri will likely bring temperatures below zero, which will feel even colder with wind chill. If you choose to enjoy cannabis outdoors this weekend, please do so safely and keep in mind layering is key to retaining body heat. Wear insulated clothing, waterproof outer layers, and accessories like hats and gloves to protect yourself from the cold.

Cannabis-Infused Winter Warmers:

It’s no secret that hot beverages go a long way on a frigid winter day. Kickstart your morning or wind down in the evening with cannabis-infused hot drinks like chai, cocoa, or herbal teas. These soul-warming drinks not only offer a comforting high but also keep you warm from the inside out.

Hotbox Igloo Experience:

Nothing calls back to the old days like an old-fashioned hot box. We realize you may not have access to an igloo in Missouri, but if you have a well-insulated outdoor space that you don’t mind getting a little smoky like a garage or parked car, consider creating a hotbox haven. Gather with friends, bring blankets, dress in heavy layers, and indulge in the cozy warmth while sharing stories, laughter, and cannabis delights.

Winter Cannabis Cooking Classes:

Some say the best way to beat the cold is to avoid it all together. Stay indoors and turn the kitchen into a winter wonderland of cannabis-infused culinary delights. You can even host a cooking class with friends, experimenting with recipes that incorporate cannabis, from appetizers to desserts. That way, you and your friends can stay nice and toasty while being, well, nice and toasty.

Remember to consume cannabis responsibly and be aware of the potential effects of extreme cold on your body. Always prioritize your safety and the safety of those around you, especially when planning any activities in freezing to below freezing temperatures.

Looking for high-quality products to turn a bitterly cold weekend into a memorable one? Stop in at Nature Med and talk to our highly trained and experienced staff about the products that work best for you.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Rolling a Perfect Joint

A Step-by-Step Guide to Rolling a Perfect Joint

Welcome to the wonderful world of joint rolling! Whether you’re a seasoned smoker looking to enhance your rolling skills or a beginner eager to craft your first joint, this step-by-step guide is here to help you achieve joint-rolling mastery. We’ll cover everything from selecting your materials to lighting up and enjoying a smooth, even burn.

Section 1: Gather Your Supplies

To embark on your joint-rolling journey, gather the following supplies:

  • High-quality rolling papers
  • Freshly ground cannabis
  • A crutch or filter (optional but recommended for a smoother smoke)

Section 2: Preparing Your Cannabis

Start by grinding your cannabis to a medium consistency. This ensures an even burn and allows for optimal airflow through your joint. Invest in a quality grinder for the best results.

Section 3: Creating the Crutch

A crutch, also known as a filter or a tip, is a mouthpiece that not only adds structure to your joint but also prevents loose bits of cannabis from entering your mouth. The simplest way to make a crutch for your joint is to fold the edge of a small piece of card stock in opposing directions around four times before rolling the rest of the crutch around the folds. Keep this newly-crafted crutch handy, as you’ll be adding it to your joint in the next couple steps.

Section 4: Filling the Joint

1. Even Distribution:

Begin by sprinkling your ground cannabis evenly along the length of the rolling paper. Aim for consistency in thickness to avoid an uneven burn.

2. Adding the Crutch:

Place the crutch at one end of the paper, ensuring it’s parallel with the cannabis. This will create a foundation for your joint.

Section 5: Rolling the Joint

1. Forming the Shape:

Using your thumbs and index fingers, roll the front side of the paper down so it can only cover the weed and tip. Position your index fingers to cover the insides of the joint with the front side of the paper and roll it up upward. You’ll want to tuck the front side of the paper between the cannabis and the back of the paper as tightly as possible. When you have the front of the paper tucked behind the cannabis as tightly as you can, release your index fingers and continue rolling your joint up to the adhesive line.

2. Sealing the Deal:

Once you’ve got your desired sturdiness, lick the adhesive edge of the rolling paper and seal it, using your fingers to ensure a tight but not overly compressed joint.

Section 6: Final Touches

1. Tamping Down:

Gently tap the ends of your joint on a flat surface to ensure an even distribution of cannabis and a consistent burn.

2. Shaping:

If necessary, shape the joint by gently pressing and rolling between your fingers.

Section 7: Light Up and Enjoy

Hold your joint at a slight angle and light the tip evenly. Rotate the joint while lighting to create an even burn across the entire circumference.

1. Inhale Slowly:

Take slow, deliberate drags to savor the flavor and prevent the joint from burning too quickly.

2. Exhale Smoothly:

Release the smoke slowly to avoid harsh hits and enjoy a smoother overall experience.

Section 8: Troubleshooting Tips

Uneven Burn:

If your joint burns unevenly, gently touch up the slower side with the lighter to encourage an even burn.

Canoeing:

Prevent canoeing (uneven burn down one side) by addressing it early. Evenly burn the edges with your lighter to correct the trajectory.

Congratulations, you’ve successfully rolled a joint! Remember, practice makes perfect, so don’t be discouraged if your first attempt isn’t flawless. Experiment with different techniques, find what works best for you, and enjoy the journey of perfecting your joint-rolling skills. Need high quality flower to practice your technique with? CBD and the Holidays

The holiday season, while festive and joyous for many, can also bring about stress, anxiety, and the holiday blues for some. The pressures of social gatherings, gift-giving, and the overall hustle and bustle can take a toll on mental well-being.

In recent years, CBD-rich cannabis products have gained popularity for their potential therapeutic effects, offering a natural and alternative approach to managing holiday-related stress and depression.

CBD (cannabidiol) is believed to offer potential relief for the holiday blues through various mechanisms. While individual responses to CBD can vary, here are some ways in which CBD may help alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression during the holiday season:

Anti-anxiety Effects:

CBD has been studied for its anxiolytic properties, meaning it may help reduce anxiety. By interacting with receptors in the endocannabinoid system, CBD may regulate neurotransmitter activity and promote a sense of calm, potentially easing the heightened stress associated with holiday preparations and gatherings.

Mood Regulation

CBD’s potential influence on the endocannabinoid system plays a role in mood regulation as well. Through interactions with serotonin receptors, CBD might contribute to a more stable mood, helping to lift spirits and reducing feelings of depression or sadness.

Stress Relief

CBD has been suggested to have stress-reducing effects, helping individuals cope with the pressures and demands of the holiday season. By modulating the body’s stress response, CBD may promote a more relaxed state of mind.

A Complementary Approach

CBD is often seen as a complementary approach rather than a standalone solution. It can be integrated into a broader wellness plan that includes healthy lifestyle choices, mindfulness practices, and social support.

It’s important to note that while many people report positive experiences with CBD, scientific research is still evolving, and more studies are needed to fully understand its effects on mood and mental health. Additionally, individual factors such as dosage, frequency of use, and personal health conditions can influence how CBD affects each person.

A Beginner’s Guide to Terpenes

A Beginner's Guide to Terpenes

Welcome to the aromatic world of cannabis! Beyond the high and the munchies, there’s a symphony of scents that make each strain unique. In this blog, we’ll explore the fascinating realm of cannabis terpenes – the aromatic compounds responsible for the distinctive smells and flavors of your favorite buds.

What are Terpenes?

Terpenes are organic compounds found in various plants, including cannabis. These aromatic molecules play a crucial role in shaping the plant’s fragrance and flavor profile. In the cannabis world, terpenes are like the fingerprints of each strain, influencing not only the sensory experience but also contributing to the overall effects.

The Entourage Effect

One of the most intriguing aspects of cannabis terpenes is their synergy with cannabinoids, known as the entourage effect. Terpenes and cannabinoids work in harmony, enhancing or modulating each other’s effects. Understanding this interplay is key to appreciating the holistic benefits of different strains.

Common Cannabis Terpenes

Myrcene:

  • Aroma: Earthy, musky, herbal.
  • Effects: Sedative, relaxing, potential anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Medical Uses: Myrcene is believed to have muscle relaxant and sedative effects, making it potentially beneficial for patients dealing with insomnia, muscle tension, or pain.

Limonene:

  • Aroma: Citrusy, lemony.
  • Effects: Uplifting, mood-enhancing, potential anti-anxiety properties.
  • Medical Uses: Limonene may be beneficial for patients dealing with stress, anxiety, and depression. It is also thought to have potential anti-cancer properties.

Pinene:

  • Aroma: Piney, earthy.
  • Effects: Alertness, memory retention, potential bronchodilator.
  • Medical Uses: Pinene may be helpful for patients with asthma due to its bronchodilator effects. It’s also believed to aid in memory retention and alertness.

Linalool:

  • Aroma: Floral, lavender.
  • Effects: Calming, anti-anxiety, potential anti-convulsant properties.
  • Medical Uses: Linalool is often associated with relaxation and stress relief. It may be beneficial for patients with anxiety, insomnia, or seizures.

Terpinolene:

  • Aroma: Sweet, herbal, floral.
  • Effects: Uplifting, antioxidant, potential anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Medical Uses: Terpinolene is thought to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It may be useful for patients dealing with oxidative stress or inflammation.
Understanding the terpene profile of a cannabis strain can help patients tailor their experience based on their specific needs. For example, a patient looking for relaxation and pain relief might opt for a strain with a higher myrcene content, while someone seeking an energizing and mood-lifting effect might prefer a strain rich in limonene or pinene. It’s important for patients to experiment cautiously, start with low doses, and observe how different terpenes affect their individual health conditions. You can learn more about terpene profiles from our highly trained staff when you visit your closest Nature Med location.

Always consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice on using cannabis for medical purposes.

How to Find Your Dose: Cannabis Edibles

Embarking on the journey of cannabis-infused edibles can be an exciting and enjoyable experience, but it’s essential to approach it with caution and awareness. Finding the right dose is like unlocking a personalized gateway to relaxation and euphoria. In this blog, we’ll delve into the art of discovering your perfect cannabis edible dose, ensuring a pleasant and controlled experience.

Understanding Individual Tolerance

One of the critical factors in determining the right cannabis edible dose is recognizing that everyone’s tolerance is unique. Factors such as body weight, metabolism, and previous cannabis exposure all play a role. Start low and go slow should be your mantra when venturing into the world of edibles.

Start with Low-THC Content

When selecting cannabis-infused edibles, opt for products with lower THC content, especially if you’re a beginner. This allows you to gauge your body’s response without overwhelming yourself. Many edibles come with clear labeling of THC content per serving, helping you make informed choices.

Patience is Key

Unlike smoking or vaping, the effects of cannabis edibles take time to kick in. It’s common for users to feel impatient and consume more, thinking the initial dose was too small. However, it’s crucial to be patient, as effects can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours to manifest fully. Resist the temptation to overindulge while waiting for the high.

Consider THC:CBD Ratios

CBD is another compound found in cannabis that does not induce a high. It’s known for its calming and therapeutic properties. Combining CBD with THC in your edibles can help balance the psychoactive effects, providing a more relaxed experience that cannabis enthusiasts often refer to as “the entourage effect”. Experimenting with different CBD-THC ratios can help you find the ideal balance for your preferences.

Keep a Journal

Maintaining a cannabis journal can be a valuable tool in your quest for the perfect edible dose. Record details such as the type of edible, THC content, your mood before consumption, and the effects experienced. This log will serve as a personalized guide, helping you fine-tune your dosage over time.

Stay Hydrated and Nourished

Consuming cannabis edibles on an empty stomach may intensify the effects, potentially leading to discomfort. Prioritize a balanced meal before indulging in your chosen treat. Additionally, staying hydrated can help mitigate any potential side effects let you better enjoy the ride.

Discovering the right dose for cannabis edibles is a journey of self-exploration and mindfulness. By starting with low THC content, being patient, considering CBD-THC ratios, and keeping a journal, you can tailor your experience for optimal enjoyment. Remember, the key is to embrace the process, listen to your body, and savor the unique pleasures that cannabis edibles can offer.

A Guide to Tolerance Breaks

If you’ve ever found yourself needing more and more of your favorite herb to feel the magic, a tolerance break might be the breath of fresh air your relationship with cannabis needs. This may seem like a tall task, especially if you use cannabis medicinally or as part of your daily routine. We’ll walk you through what you can expect with a tolerance break and how it may be more possible than you think.

What's a Tolerance Break?

A tolerance break, affectionately known as a “T-break,” is like a vacation for your cannabis receptors. Over time, your body gets used to the effects of cannabis, and you find yourself puffing away just to feel a fraction of what you once did. Essentially, it’s all about taking a break from the green stuff to reset your tolerance.

Why Take a Tolerance Break from Cannabis?

Maximized Buzz: The most immediate perk of a T-break is that when you return to your herb, you’ll feel like a newbie again. A little goes a long way, and it’s like discovering the joys of cannabis all over. Pro Tip: Once you return to consuming after your tolerance break, start with half the amount you typically consume. You will thank us later.

Saving Your Stash: Tolerance breaks can help you stretch your stash because you won’t need as much to achieve your desired effects. This also helps to save money that you’d normally put towards cannabis products while you’re taking a hiatus.

Health Benefits: Just like your lungs appreciate a break from cigarette smoke, your respiratory system will thank you for giving it a breather from inhaling anything, even something as dope as cannabis.

How Long Should a Cannabis Tolerance Break Be?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this. The length of your T-break depends on what you’re comfortable with and your goals. But here’s a rough guide:

Casual Use: A week or two should work wonders. If you honestly just enjoy one here and there, 48 hours is also said to do the trick.
Frequent Flyers: If you’re a daily toker, consider a month for a major reset.
Heavier Use: Several months might be in order for the full-blown reset experience.

Survival Tips for Your Cannabis T-Break:

Stay Busy: Find new hobbies, hang out with friends, or get into a good book. Distract your mind and you’ll be amazed how time will fly. Movies are another great way to get lost in what you’re doing and help take your mind off things.

Set Goals: Know why you’re doing this. It could be to save money, pass a drug test, or just enjoy your next session even more. No matter what your sights are set on, keeping your eye on the prize will pay off in the long run.

Stay Hydrated: Water is your best friend during a T-break. It helps flush your system and can help regulate your sleep patterns.

Check-in with a Buddy: Sometimes, sharing your T-break journey with a friend can make it more enjoyable and help you stay on track.

Don’t Stress: It’s all about self-improvement, not self-punishment. Remember, the cannabis will be there waiting for you when you’re ready.

A little break to reset your mind and body can go a long way.

in Missouri

Obtaining a medical marijuana card has become increasingly straightforward, with streamlined processes and accessible medical evaluations making the application process more user-friendly than ever. Here are the general steps you’ll want to follow to get a medical marijuana card in Missouri:

Check Eligibility: Verify that you meet the qualifying conditions for medical marijuana use in Missouri. The list of qualifying conditions can vary, so make sure to review the official guidelines from the DHSS.

Obtain Medical Records: You will need to gather relevant medical records that prove you have a qualifying condition. These records should show your diagnosis, treatment history, and any other pertinent information.

Find a Medical Marijuana Doctor: Search for a licensed medical marijuana doctor in Missouri who can certify that you have a qualifying condition. Not all doctors are authorized to recommend medical marijuana, so ensure that the doctor you choose is registered with the DHSS. For our patients in the Kansas City area, Nature Med partners with Bluebird Wellness Center, a medical clinic that is certified to assist with the MMJ application process.

If the doctor determines that you have a qualifying condition, they can provide you with a certification.

Pay Application Fee: There is typically a fee associated with the application process. Make sure to pay this fee online as part of your application.

Wait for Approval: After submitting your application, the DHSS will review it. If everything is in order, they will issue you a medical marijuana card. This card will allow you to purchase and use medical marijuana from licensed dispensaries in the state.

Visit Dispensaries: Once you have your medical marijuana card, you can visit licensed dispensaries in Missouri to purchase medical cannabis products that meet your condition and needs.
